Northern Soul . Elaine Constantine .
Early 1970’s Northern Britain in the grip of post-industrial collapse. Black American soul music collides with discontented youth creating a combustible new subculture as two boys from the working class terraces of Bury escape into the club scene. DJs playing unheard record discoveries and amphetamine fuelled all-nighters become the ultimate outlet for self expression.
Researched with contemporary street images, historical archive, and personal photographs. House interiors refurbished with wallpapers and decoration scoured from derelict properties in an authentic record of the mid nineteen seventies. 'An impressive evocation of the 70's dance cult' Guardian.
Wigan Casino’s canopy and sign recreated, and its interior dance hall and other club interiors detailed with authentic vintage record decks, stage lighting, PA systems, drapes, and original copies of the rare vinyl featured in the soundtrack. Detailed contemporary graphics, plus a raft of period vehicles dress the nightclub car parks and streets .
